...to wish everyone a great holiday season.  I've been off in the wilderness of life for the last year.  During that time, my computer blew up, I got a nifty little Ubuntu EeePC netbook, and I've finally gone back to college!

Oh, and for all my Otaku friends:

私は日本ごのクラスをやります。 日本ごのクラスがだいすきです。

It's been a pretty great semester, I'm getting good grades all around, and I'm moving into a new apartment w/my bf of over a year-and-a-half here soon.  I also completed a poetry class this semester, and with encouragement from my instructor, submitted some pieces to Soundings Review.  I'll know by March if they are publishing any of it.

Unfortuntely, I haven't been around here because with the lack of decent computer, I've mostly just been playing chess, emultators, and pen-and-paper stuff like D&D.

So all in all, it's been a great year.  How's everyone else been? I should at least be around here and there over the holiday.  I miss you guys!  What's new?  How's everyone's holidays shaping up?

well, hey, Tzu

Responses will trickle in  Wink

Glad to hear you're doing alright.  Good luck with the publication.  If you're looking for more publishing options, there are tons of online publishers, and lots of national mags that publish collegiate writing.  pw.org is a great resource, including a database of writing competitions.

I'm good.  Not much is new.  I'm about to go to L.A. for a week to meet my gf's family for Christmas.

I still play JKA.  MBII to be exact, but still.  And I come here every other day...

@Nevvbert: Awesome, enjoy the sun! And yeah, I never realized how many freakin' places were around to publish stuff.  I only submitted 5 of my poems to Soundings (who wants 1st pub rights) so I still have a handful more that I was going to do a simultaneous submission for.  I'll add that to my list!

@Omatt: <3

@Seran: Stop being such a work-a-holic

@Deus:  I am hoping to be around more (I know I've said this before) now that I'm always plugged into the net, and one day hope to get some gaming opportunities with peeps again!

So I have come to the conclusion that between trying to get games to work under Wine is futile, and trying to get anything multimedia to run with onboard Intel 850 graphics is a pipedream.

But I refuse to give up PC gaming, as nice as my bf's PS3 is and all.  I just dumped about $700 on a new rig, from the ground up.  (It's an educational expense, it's just...well screw it, I'll take a studio class next term or something to justify the GTX card and 22" widescreen LED monitor.  :-P  )  So I look forward to gaming with you all again in about a week!  I'm back on XFire: jed1tzu  internet's up at the apt as well, so I'll get you all a PS3 username soon.

So suffice to say, I guess this was more than a visit this time.....I'm baaa-aaaack!

Honestly, I find Windows 7 to be a very nice gaming platform.  Linux always has this shiny mystique, to me, but whenever I try to get things working, I find myself not wanting to deal with the headache.

Exactly.  I love that everything is open source, and so if there isn't a Debian package and it's not in the repositories, I can still just compile it and BOOM there it is.  Everything's nicely integrated, lots of community support, but...damn, it's buggy.  And I've tried now with 3 different games that supposedly work with Wine and had nothing but headaches.

Linux is still great for netbooks and junker old computers that don't have OS support though.  I'll prolly still be dual booting it on the new rig so I can sync to Ubuntu One to easily swap files on my EeePC and here at my mom's house on this old Celeron.  But I really miss my Windows 7.  :-(

Hi Cham, I'm still learning Chinese for the Navy in Cali, and should be graduating (with the only AA degree signed off on by congress) in late October.  Because of my curriculum, I have very little time, so I lurk a lot (and occasionally post) now, but I'm glad to see you back!

I currently dual boot OSX and XP on my MacBook, so I still havn't dealt with Win7.  The military switched to Vista last year, and it has brought nothing but headaches, though it still isn't as bad as WinME was.

Yeah Vista's a headache.  They should upgrade.  lol  But good to see you're still lurkin'!  Keep pushing that degree!  There will be plenty of games when you are done.  ;-)

I don't get why companies and government bodies, who waited to this year and last year to switch not just go to 7. At this rate Windows 8 will be out before they switch to 7

We still use 2000 here.  Doubt that'll change anytime soon, the amount of money it would take to upgrade 200k+ machines is rediculous.

I don't know about corporate thought, but the government has to get a custom build of the OS which is then picked apart for security flaws  long before they ever adopt it.  They lag behind on purpose.

Enterprise environments have operated on waiting for SP1 before switching for years.  XP wasn't solid until SP2, and I know of many companies that refused to switch to XP Pro in their networks until SP2.  I do believe Windows 7 can break this rule, but most aren't willing to do so.  They want the OS to be put through a full service pack before they put it on their networks.  This way, they're better assured that driver compatibility won't be an issue, and it gives IT time to test line-of-business software on the new OS.  This is standard practice for enterprise-level IT.
