So back when Portal 2 came out, I bought it for PS3 and was very happy.  This semester, one of my courses focuses entirely on creating an addon/mod/whathaveyou for Portal 2.  Since the tools are PC-only, I used the code that came with the PS3 version to unlock a free download on Steam.  It downloaded and installed fine, but every time I try to run it, it gets through the Valve and Havok credit screens, and then crashes to desktop and throws an "Engine Error:  Could not load library client."  Valve's support site suggests disabling antivirus, adding Portal 2 to my firewall list, running a repair through command prompt on one of the Steam executables, and moving Steam's folder to a path that doesn't include any non-english characters.  The first three suggestions did absolutely nothing.  I haven't done the fourth one, because Steam is simply in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam"  and that's all english.  Any ideas from the tech-savvy among us?  I have a ticket pending with Valve, but that could take forever.

Have you tried running it outside of steam?  the actual exe should be in /steam/steamapps/common/portal2

Same result.  Also tried running both it and Steam as Administrator, zero change.

One thing I've found that works is running the applications as an administrator, sometimes the user doesn't have permissions for the files they're trying to accesses. Though I my self as a user with a separate admin user so I don't know if that applies to you, still worth giving a go.

The sad part is, the SDK runs just fine, and that's using the same libraries as the game as far as I can tell.  It would be really great if I could test my creations.  I'll just have to wait for Valve to answer my support ticket I guess.

On a whim, gonna try running the game in compatibility for XP and see if that makes any difference.  EDIT: newp.  If Valve hasn't contacted me by tomorrow, I'll try moving Steam to a simple "C:\Steam" directory.

Here's a really dumb question...but have you tried uninstalling it and running the install inside Steam again?  Also, if all else fails, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Steam?

Not a dumb question.  I haven't done either of those yet.  I guess I'll back up my homework level, and try it later tonight.

So how'd it end up working out?  You get it fixed up?

Steam has suggested, after seeing my system information, that I update my NVIDIA GeForce, and make sure I'm using it.  I have lost 90% of my faith in this company.

Well, it's a valid way of saying "we're not sure, it doesn't make any sense to us either."  And you tried the re-insallting and the C/Steam and all that and still no dice?  Did you attempt to update your video card as offered?  You aren't providing much information to get this resolved other than "I don't know why it isn't working, and Steam doesn't know either."  lol

Well Steam didn't know.  All I had to do was right click Portal 2 in Steam, click "Validate Client Files" or somesuch, and it worked fine.  How could they not have that as their very first go-to solution?!

Oh, yeah, should've remembered, I had to do that with AVP after about a week.

I'm probably going to make an account for Steam's forums and post that solution with a request to get it stickied.  So simple, but so hard to find online.

Well if you gave them the same plethora of information you gave us, I can imagine why the thought never occurred to them that you hadn't tried that yet...you know since it's the second step in their online help and support's basic troubleshooting checklist.   Roll Eyes  https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7169-TIAV-5361  Second return on Google for "steam troubleshooting"

This is why I stopped helping people troubleshoot problems...they don't give me feedback, and then they blame a large company for not having a solution that is in plain day in a place they already checked and got to "step 3" on...  *sigh*

So this was just a troll post, right?  I fell for it, right?  Joke's on me?  Got it.
