I don't know if anyone remembers my old work.

But I finished this new drawing the other day. I think it's safe to say I've improved somewhat.

Comments? Don't mention the bowstring. I know it's not there!

PS: Does anyone know where that tutorial for lightsaber effects is?

I like it!  I couldn't really tell if it was a man or woman at first.  Bewbs don't tell a lie, but the face is kind of masculine despite the long hair.

Nice work KD. What are you using... mouse, tablet, or do you scan sketches? Dont be afraid to shade darker.

And to make lightsabers... Photoshop always gives you 10 different ways to do 1 thing. There are a bunch of tutorials out there. Try google search or youtube has some videos.

The most difficult part is usually making the shape of the blade, which is actually not very difficult anyways. I like using a path or a rounded rectangle... whatever works though. Fill it white on its own layer. Then just mess with blending options. Inner glow + outer glow are easiest. You can do a gradient overlay if you want to...

Thats the lazy way I guess. I think some people like to duplicate the solid blade layer a few times and gaussian blur each one at different amounts. Then you colorize it with either hue/saturation or whatever you like to use to do that. I like blending options because its not a permanent change though, you can tweak it and such whenever.

Thanks AM. I usually do the pencilling by hand, scan that in, and then go over it with my Wacom in PhotoShop. I know what you mean with the shading. I usually build colours up; starting with the shading and adding highlights, but like you've spotted, it's still too light.

I like it!  I couldn't really tell if it was a man or woman at first.
a) Cheers.
b) I'm not very good at drawing women. So I mostly omit them from my drawings. :\
c) It's the hips that give it away.

There are three dancing lights. Scroll right. The party bard cast dancing lights as they entered the encounter. This drawing is actually a recreation of a D&D session I ran about a fortnight ago and the John Woo moment (high tumble roll, followed by a critical hit) inspired me to illustrate it.

PS: This character is secretly a tiefling, but don't tell any of the other PCs that. They think she's human.

Thought it was a guy, till I read the post about boobs.  Like the colors and lines.

The light saber in my avatar was made like this..

In a new layer..

Make a path along the line of the 'blade'

Stroke that path in White, using whatever width you want.

Fill the area around the blade in black.

Guaesian blur that layer the same width as your line.

Change the color levels for the layer, make the lower input about 25, the upper about 55.  These numbers vary of course, by your taste.

Duplicate the layer.

On this one do the blur again, this time double your line.

Change the upper input color level low, something like 15, or 10 even.

Repeat the same blur.

Adjust the levels again, this time to make whatever color you want (just like in JA+, with RGB values.)

Make the upper output level about halved, around 125.

Move your first blade layer back up on top.

Duplicate it again.

This time blur it about half of the original line width.

Upper input low, like 10-15.

Blur again, equal to line width.

Set this layer's color, just like one before.

Move original layer back up on top (the white one).

Blur it again, this time slightly, like 3/4's of original line width.

Set all those layers to 'screen' mode. and thats it.
